Embodiment Construction

[0025] refer to figure 1 , describes a typical motor vehicle including a brake booster. The vehicle may include an engine 10 and a brake assembly 50 .

[0026] Engine 10 may include a plurality of cylinders 12 and corresponding pistons 28 . Airflow into and out of each of the cylinders 12 may be controlled through the use of inlet valves 14 and outlet valves 16 , respectively.

[0027] Engine 10 may include an inlet 20 that allows air to be drawn into the engine. Engine 10 may further include a turbocharger 22 . Typically, a turbocharger comprises a compressor 22a arranged on the same shaft as an exhaust gas driven turbine 22b driving the compressor 22a. Turbocharger 22 may improve engine power output and emissions.

[0028] Air may enter engine 10 through inlet 20 and pass through compressor 22a. Air that has been compressed by the turbocharger's compressor 22 a may be throttled by an inlet throttle 19 before being delivered to the inlet manifold 18 .

Abstract

The present invention relates to a method for cleaning valves. A method and system for cleaning a brake booster aspirator shut-off valve is provided. The shut-off valve is operable to selectively allow intake air flow through the aspirator; the aspirator bypasses the engine's throttle and provides a vacuum source to the brake booster. The method includes determining whether the shutoff valve will require cleaning, opening the shutoff valve to allow air flow through the shutoff valve and cleaning the shutoff valve, and adjusting a throttle position of the engine to compensate for the additional intake air flow through the aspirator.

Description

[0001] Cross References to Related Applications [0002] This application claims priority to UK Patent Application No. 1501281.8 filed 27 January 2015, the entire contents of which are hereby incorporated by reference for all purposes. technical field [0003] The present disclosure relates to a method for cleaning a valve within an air intake system of a motor vehicle, although not exclusively, to a method for cleaning a super aspirator shut-off valve. Background technique [0004] Most modern vehicles are equipped with a brake booster that uses a vacuum chamber to increase the braking force supplied from the brake pedal to the master cylinder. The brake booster prevents the driver from feeling that the brake pedal is heavy. [0005] To operate, the brake booster requires a source of vacuum pressure, which in naturally aspirated engines is typically delivered exclusively by the inlet manifold. In some cases, the vacuum supplied by the inlet manifold may not be sufficient....
