Abstract

A steering apparatus is provided to stabilize absorption characteristics of impact energy. The steering apparatus (20) includes: an outer column (23) supported by a rack (21) and an inner pipe (24) retained by the outer column (23) for movement in a front-rear direction of a vehicle. An impact energy absorbing member (26) is disposed in the inner pipe (24) and has a generally U sectional shape along the axis line (C2) of the inner pipe (24). The impact energy absorbing member (26) includes an abuttable section (62) bent from the rear end of a base section (61) such that the abuttable section is abutted against a fastening mechanism (27); and an energy absorbing section (63) bent forward from one end of the abuttable section (62) such that the absorbing section absorbs energy of the impact while deforming.
