Embodiment Construction

[0012] The following detailed description is illustrative only and is not intended to limit the invention or the application and uses of the invention. Furthermore, there is no intention to be bound by the theory presented in the preceding background or the following detailed description.

[0013] Various non-limiting embodiments of aircraft and aircraft windscreen heating systems are disclosed herein. In some embodiments, aircraft and aircraft windshield systems include a first heating element and a second heating element. In normal power operation of the aircraft when the main power source is running, the first heating element heats the main portion of the windshield. The second heating element heats the small area of the draft shield with the primary power source if the primary power source is on, or the small area of the draft shield with the backup power source if the primary power source is not operational. Heating this small area of the windshield during emergen...

Abstract

An aircraft and an aircraft windshield heating system are provided. The aircraft windshield heating system includes a windshield, first and second heating elements, and a power bus controller. The windshield has a main portion and a reduced portion, the first and second heating elements are thermally coupled with the main portion and the reduced portion, respectively. The power bus controller is operatively coupled with the first heating element and the second heating element and is configured for coupling to a primary power supply and a backup power supply. The power bus controller is configured to determine when the primary power supply is available, to direct power from the primary power supply to the first heating element when the primary power supply is available, and to direct power from the backup power supply to the second heating element when the primary power supply is not available.

Description

technical field [0001] TECHNICAL FIELD relates generally to aircraft having a windscreen heating system, and more particularly to an aircraft comprising a first heating element for heating a main portion of the windscreen and a second heating element for heating a small portion of the aircraft's windscreen Aircraft Windshield Heating System Background technique [0002] Conventional passenger aircraft typically include heated cockpit windows. The window is heated to provide a clear view in all conditions. For example, fog and ice formation can be reduced with such heated windows. Conventional heated windows include a heating element that extends over the entire window or a portion of the window. The power required to heat the entire window is high, but in normal power operation, with the full power source operating, without burdening the aircraft power system. However, the power requirements of heated windows in emergency power operation place a heavy burden on the emerg...
