Embodiment Construction

[0016] The present subject matter relates to topcoat formulations that can be used in a wide range of applications. The topcoat formulation comprises (i) a solvated polyvinyl butyral having hydroxyl or other functional groups, (ii) an isocyanate or urethane prepolymer, and (iii) a high molecular weight polyol. The formulation may also contain other components such as (iv) anti-UV additives and (v) crosslinking additives.

[0017] The present subject matter provides improvements over conventional aqueous functional topcoats due to the ability to provide printability and shelf life stability while improving ease of manufacturability. The improvement over aqueous topcoat technology is attributable to the fact that the topcoat formulations of the present invention are completely solvent solution processable. Solvent solution processable coatings are easier and cheaper to manufacture while providing higher quality film formation through complete coalescence. High levels of membra...

Description

[0001] Cross References to Related Applications [0002] This application claims the benefit of US Provisional Application No. 61 / 992,938, filed May 14, 2014, which is incorporated herein by reference in its entirety. technical field [0003] The present subject matter relates to topcoats, methods of forming and / or depositing topcoat formulations, and resulting topcoated films or substrates. Background technique [0004] Piezoelectric deposition inks, or more commonly known as inkjet printing, have gone through several stages of evolution over the past few decades. All-solvent printing technology has become the workhorse of large-scale operations in the industry, but leaves little opportunity for smaller-scale needs. With newer ink technologies, such as UV-curable printing inks, mild solvents (Ecosolvent) and latex inks, the needs of these smaller-scale, shorter printing operations are met; Membranes can no longer meet the current industrial needs. Issues of inconsistent ...
