The method specifically comprises the following steps: power grid running data is collected, frequency and voltage of a node where a failing STATCOM is located are detected, frequency and voltage change ratios are calculated, and the transient instability type is judged; when the electric power system has frequency dominated transient instability, the STATCOM is adopted to absorb reactive power, and voltage of part of nodes is reduced, so that the frequency stability of the electric power system is improved by reducing active power shortage of the system. If a reactive power regulation requirement exceeds the reactive capacity range of the STATCOM, the STATCOM is applied to the greatest extent and other emergency control means are adopted to cooperate with the STATCOM reactive regulation, so that stable running of the electric power system is guaranteed.
