Abstract

The invention relates to a trajectory guidance instrument that is securable to a surgical tool for use in conjunction with X-ray machines. More particularly, the device includes a radiolucent outrigger having radiodense indicia disposed on the outrigger so that the radiodense indicia is visible via an X-ray machine to provide an angular trajectory for the instrument. The outrigger is securable to various surgical tools for the purpose of providing real time trajectory guidance to surgeons during a procedure. In general, the precision trajectory guidance instrument comprises a substantially rigid outrigger device which it securable to a portion of the surgical tool for trajectory guidance. The trajectory guidance instrument may be attached with clips, fasteners, adhesives, hook and loop or the like.

Description

technical field [0001] The present invention relates to a trajectory guiding instrument fixable to a surgical tool for use with an X-ray machine. In particular, the device includes a radiolucent outrigger having radiopaque markers disposed thereon that are visible via an x-ray machine to provide an angular trajectory for the instrument. Background technique [0002] Medical procedures involving the vertebrae are often complex because precision and accuracy are required to avoid nerve damage and damage to major blood vessels. Precise depth-guided instruments are required for percutaneous spinal surgery. These procedures sometimes involve penetrating the hard cortical bone of the vertebrae and passing through the softer cancellous bone underneath. Surgeons typically require high force to penetrate cortical bone. Once the cortical bone is penetrated, extreme care must be taken to avoid rapid penetration of all cancellous bone. There is also the danger of rapid passage throu...
