Embodiment Construction

[0046] figure 1 Portions of a network are shown as an example of a network implementing the methods described herein. It will be appreciated that the form of the network may vary, and in any case, figure 1 Only a small part of the network is shown, which is sufficient for the understanding of the method.

[0047] therefore, figure 1 An Internet Protocol (IP) network 10 is shown in which the Precision Time Protocol (PTP) is used to distribute timing reference signals among network nodes. In the illustrated portion of the network 10 there are two boundary clock (BC) nodes 12 , 14 . The method described herein is also suitable for use in other methods for synchronization through bi-directional exchange of messages, such as Network Time Protocol (NTP). References to a node that is a clock include nodes that include a clock operating as a clock.

[0048] One illustrated portion 16 of network 10 operates using Multiprotocol Label Switching (MPLS). In traditional IP networks, pac...

Abstract

A method of operation of a multi-protocol label switched network involves, in an active node of the network, receiving a first data packet from a source node and forwarding the first data packet to a destination node. At the same time, the active node measures the dwell time of the first data packet in the active node. The active node then sends additional data packets containing residence time information.

Description

technical field [0001] The present invention relates to telecommunications networks, and in particular to networks using Multiprotocol Label Switching (MPLS). More specifically, the present invention relates to the transmission of residence time information in such networks. Background technique [0002] In order to be able to achieve synchronization throughout the network, it is known to transmit timing information between network nodes. An example of a scenario where this applies is the case of a cellular communication network, where synchronization between access points in respective cells is necessary. One method of transmitting timing information uses the Precision Time Protocol (PTP), and requires a node to measure the time when it received a message, and measure the time when it forwarded the message to its destination. The time elapsed between two times is called dwell time. Information about this residence time is sent to the destination node for calculation of t...
