Problems solved by technology

Even small inaccuracies in exhaust temperature estimation can lead to large errors in engine operation
For example, if engine operation is adjusted based on an underestimated exhaust temperature, this can lead to exhaust overheating
Thus, this narrows the window of operating conditions in which the exhaust gas temperature can be accurately determined

Embodiment Construction

[0018] This instruction is concerned with determining the engine exhaust system (e.g. figure 1 temperature in the engine system). Exhaust gas temperature measurements may be performed based on a duty cycle of a heater coupled to an exhaust gas sensor of the engine system ( figure 2 ), and is further performed based on the expected offset caused by transient vehicle operation ( image 3 ). The controller can be configured to execute control routines such as executing Figures 4 to 5 Example routine of ) to infer a composite instantaneous exhaust gas temperature based on the reciprocal of the heater's duty cycle and further based on vehicle conditions during transient operation (eg, based on changes in vehicle speed, engine load, and accelerator pedal position). Additionally, the controller may diagnose the engine based on the difference between the estimated composite instantaneous exhaust temperature and the modeled exhaust flange temperature ( Figure 6 ). Example Exhau...

Abstract

The present invention relates to systems and methods for determining exhaust gas temperature. Methods and systems are provided for accurately inferring exhaust gas temperature during steady state vehicle operation and during transient vehicle operation based on the duty cycle of an exhaust gas sensor heating element. Steady state temperature is extrapolated based on the inverse of the duty cycle and then adjusted with a transfer function that compensates for transients caused by changes in vehicle speed and load, and compensates for tip-in and tip-out events happened. The extrapolated temperature can also be compared to the modeled temperature to identify exhaust temperature overheating conditions so that mitigating actions can be taken promptly.

Description

technical field [0001] The present application relates to systems and methods for accurately determining engine exhaust temperature and adjusting engine operation accordingly. Background technique [0002] It may be desirable to accurately determine the exhaust temperature of an engine. By determining the engine exhaust temperature, it is possible to provide mitigating action when the exhaust temperature is higher than desired. Additionally, determining exhaust temperature may aid in evaluating operation of exhaust aftertreatment devices. One way to determine exhaust temperature is to install thermocouples, thermistors, or other temperature sensors in the exhaust passages that direct the byproducts of engine combustion to exhaust aftertreatment devices. However, thermocouples or thermistors can degrade when exposed to higher exhaust temperatures. Additionally, the performance of the exhaust temperature sensor may degrade if the acidic combustion byproducts accumulate on t...
