Embodiment Construction

[0074] Reference will now be made in detail to representative embodiments illustrated in the accompanying drawings. It should be understood that the following description is not intended to limit the embodiments to one preferred embodiment. On the contrary, it is intended to cover alternatives, modifications and equivalents, which may be included within the spirit and scope of the described embodiments as defined by the appended claims.

[0075] The present disclosure relates to force sensing devices that may be incorporated into various electronic or computing devices, such as but not limited to computers, smartphones, tablets, trackpads, wearable devices, small form factor devices, and the like. The force sensing device can be used to detect one or more user force inputs on the input surface, and the processor (or processing unit) can then correlate the sensed inputs with force measurements and provide those inputs to the computing device. In some implementations, a force s...

Abstract

The present application discloses a force sensing architecture. The invention discloses an electronic device with a force sensing device. The electronic device includes a user input surface defining an exterior surface of the electronic device, a first capacitive sensing element, and a second capacitive sensing element capacitively coupled to the first capacitive sensing element. The electronic device also includes a first spacer layer between the first capacitive sensing element and the second capacitive sensing element, and a second spacer between the first capacitive sensing element and the second capacitive sensing element Floor. The first spacer layer and the second spacer layer have different compositions. The electronic device also includes a sensing circuit coupled to the first capacitive sensing element and the second capacitive sensing element, the sensing circuit being configured to determine a magnitude of an applied force on the user input surface. The first spacer layer is configured to collapse when the applied force is below a force threshold, and the second spacer layer is configured to collapse when the applied force is above the force threshold.

Description

technical field [0001] This disclosure generally relates to sensing force applied against a surface, and more particularly to sensing force through changes in capacitance. Background technique [0002] Touch devices are typically used to recognize where a user touches the device, including movements, gestures, etc. As one example, a touch device may provide a computing system with information about user interactions with a graphical user interface (GUI), such as pointing at elements, reorienting or repositioning those elements, editing or typing, and interacting with other GUI features. As another example, a touch device may provide a computing system with information suitable for a user's interaction with an application, such as information related to the input or manipulation of animations, photographs, pictures, slideshows, sounds, text, other audiovisual elements, etc. . [0003] In general, however, touch input is treated as binary input. Touch is either present and ...
