Abstract

A system and method for implanting a ventricular assist device ("VAD") 300 in the heart includes one or more tools, each tool having a body 66, 266 with a channel 72, 272 therein. Each tool body is engageable with an anchor ring assembly 10 secured to the heart. The coring tool can be advanced through the channel 72 in the tool body 66 and used to form a hole in the heart wall, and the valve actuating element 100 carried on the tool can then be used to close the valve 62a-b incorporated in the anchoring ring assembly 10 . After opening valves 62a-b, VAD 300 may be delivered through channel 272 in tool body 266 into the heart. The procedure can be performed while the heart continues to beat without significant loss of blood.
