Embodiment Construction

[0014] refer to Figure 1-3 , the system 10 for monitoring an area includes monitoring an area of interest 14 (see figure 2 and 3 ) of an image capture device 12 (eg, a camera, such as a video camera). For purposes of discussion, assume that the region of interest 14 is initially "empty" (see figure 2 ). In other words, assume that the region of interest 14 initially does not include any atypical objects 16 (see figure 2 right image 3 ).

[0015] A processing device 20 such as an electronic control unit (ECU) is electrically connected to the camera 12 . Camera 12 acquires sequential images (eg, frames) of region of interest 14 . In one embodiment, frames are captured by camera 12 at predetermined time intervals. Thus, when viewed sequentially, the frames captured by the camera 12 provide a video image of the region of interest 14 over a period of time.

[0016] The ECU 20 evaluates each frame and determines any significant changes from the image from at least on...

Abstract

A method for processing image data includes identifying background scenes in background frames of the image. Each of the plurality of pixel positions in the background frame is set to a corresponding background pixel. For each of the pixel positions, a corresponding moving average and a corresponding moving variance are determined based on the luminance component of the background frame at that pixel position. Identifies the subsequent frame as the current frame. For each pixel position in the current frame that is identified as a background pixel, the moving average is updated based on one of a plurality of average weights and the moving variance is updated based on one of a plurality of variance weights. For each of the pixel positions in the current frame, whether the current pixel position is a background pixel and a foreground pixel is determined based on the brightness component of the current pixel position in the current frame, the moving average of the current pixel position, and the moving variance of the current pixel position. The identifier of one of the .

Description

Background technique [0001] The invention involves distinguishing image pixels relating to the background from image pixels relating to foreground objects. It finds particular application in connection with identifying changes to the area monitored by the video camera, and will be described with specific reference thereto. However, it will be appreciated that the invention can also be modified for other applications. [0002] Visual monitoring of an area for changes over time is desirable in some situations, as such visual changes may indicate that investigation of the area is warranted. For example, a scene in which a person suddenly appears in an empty warehouse corridor may indicate an impending theft. Similarly, a change in the scene of a tank containing fluid may indicate that a leak has occurred. [0003] Some methods for identifying changes in a monitored area identify the monitored area as background and any change to the monitored area (eg, a person entering an emp...
