Abstract

Disclosed herein is a system and method for synchronizing files from a hosted file system in which a client endpoint device has direct access to files stored on the hosted file store. When a client wishes to synchronize with files stored on the hosted file store, the process identifies a synchronization role that can handle the request. A specific sync role does not need to maintain state with client devices or file stores. The state necessary for the processing of the synchronization process is kept separate from the synchronization roles, so that any synchronization role in the system can pick up requests and process them. Once the character is selected, the sync process will proceed as usual. Since state is not maintained by a synchronous actor, multiple actors could handle the request, or two actors could handle different parts of the process.

Description

Background technique [0001] Various file synchronization solutions have been produced over the years. In these solutions, synchronization endpoints are accessible to users and applications. As files are created, modified, or deleted, the active-active synchronization engine is responsible for synchronizing these changes and bringing all endpoints to a consistent state. Some sync solutions support having managed file endpoints. However, these solutions suffer from one or both of the following limitations. First, managed endpoints are not accessible to end users or applications. Instead, hosted endpoints can only serve as "hubs" for syncing files between other (non-cloud) endpoints. Second, hosted endpoints may be accessible, but only via synchronization solution-specific access protocols. Basically, there is no "direct access" to files at hosted endpoints. Instead, the application or service must implement a synchronization solution-specific protocol and access the file t...
