The edge detection method comprises the steps of collecting an image ofa banknote to be inspected, determining at least two to-be-detected columns and at least one to-be-detected row of a first edge of the banknote to be inspected in the collected image, further determining intersections of each to-be-detected row in the at least one to-be-detected row and the at least two to-be-detected columns to be a to-be-detected pixel point set on the above basis, then detecting and obtaining at least two edge points based on the at least one to-be-detected pixel point set, and finally carrying out fitting to obtain a first straight line for characterizing a first edge based on the at least two edge points. The edge detection method has the advantages of simple steps, a small amount of calculation and high execution efficiency. The money detector with the application ofthe edge detection method can quickly complete the inspection of banknotes and is suitable for inspecting a large number of banknotes in a short time.
