A method of providing brake selection recommendations (46, 48) to a driver of a train (1) during operation of the train is disclosed, with the train having at least one electrodynamic brake (10) and at least one friction brake (12). The method includes the steps of defining a brake preference rate between the at least one elec-trodynamic brake and the at least one friction brake; determining an energy-optimized velocity profile (44) for a trip segment of the train, with the energy-optimized velocity profile having a plurality of braking sections, and associating each of the plurality of braking sections with a respective brake selection recom-mendation, wherein the determining of the energy-optimized velocity profile and the associating of each of the plurality of braking sections with a respective brake selection recommendation are constrained by a maximum travel time for the trip segment and the brake preference rate between the at least one electrodynamic brake and the at least one friction brake; and providing the respective brake selec-tion recommendations for the plurality of braking sections to the driver of the train.
