Abstract

The present invention relates to radio frequency heating systems with phase detection for impedance network tuning. Systems and methods for tuning an impedance network of a device are provided. The RF signal is provided through a transmission path connected to an impedance matching network that includes a first variable component and a second variable component. A phase angle between a forward signal and a reflected signal along the transmission path is determined. Based on the phase angle between the forward signal and the reflected signal, the first variable component is modified to improve impedance matching between an RF signal source and an electrode. After modifying the first variable component, a ratio of the power of the reflected signal to the power of the forward signal is determined, and the inductance of the second variable component is modified to reduce the power of the reflected signal versus the power of the forward signal The ratio of the power of the forward signal.

Description

technical field [0001] Embodiments of the subject matter described herein relate generally to apparatus and methods for tuning a load impedance to deliver radio frequency (RF) energy to a load. Background technique [0002] Capacitive food heating systems consist of large planar electrodes contained within a heating chamber. After placing the food load between the electrodes, electromagnetic energy is supplied to the electrodes to provide heating of the food load. As the food load thaws or cooks during the heating operation, the impedance of the food load changes. [0003] Dynamic changes in food load impedance may result in inefficient heating of the food load. What is needed is an apparatus and method for heating a food load (or other type of load) that produces efficient and uniform heating throughout the food load. Contents of the invention [0004] According to a first aspect of the present invention, a system is provided, comprising: [0005] a radio frequency (R...
