Problems solved by technology

In fact, characteristics of the subject's body, such as the diameter of the artery into which the surgical instrument is inserted or the viscosity of the blood present therein, may lead to potential buckling and / or twisting of the surgical instrument, which may not have been accounted for during the simulation
Use of thin surgical instruments may further increase flexion and / or twisting

Embodiment Construction

[0042] In the following, a simulation system is described for simulating the insertion of an elongated instrument into a subject, which may occur, for example, during a surgical procedure. A computer-implemented method for simulating insertion of an elongate instrument into a subject is also described.

[0043] In one embodiment, the simulation system provides a realistic and comprehensive training environment for diagnosis and acquisition of basic surgical skills such as manipulation of surgical instruments for trainees of medical practitioners. Thus, the system provides trainees of medical practitioners with hands-on practice to improve their technique before performing surgical procedures on patients.

[0044] figure 1 One embodiment of a system 10 for simulating insertion of an instrument into a subject is shown. The system 10 comprises: a medical or body simulation device 12; an elongated medical instrument 14 insertable at least partially into the medical device 12; a ...

Abstract

A method for simulating insertion of an elongate instrument into a subject, the method comprising: receiving one of an actual angular position and an angle of rotation of a proximal segment of the elongate instrument, wherein at least the distal end of the elongate instrument end insertion into the medical device; determining the distal angular position of the distal end of the elongated instrument inserted into the medical device using the adjustment factor and the one of the actual angular position and the rotational angle of the proximal section of the elongated instrument generating a medical image of at least a portion of the subject, the medical image including at least a representation of a distal segment of the elongated instrument, the representation of the distal segment being generated from the distal angular position; and outputting the generated medical image.

Description

technical field [0001] The present invention relates to medical simulation systems and methods, and more particularly to systems and methods for simulating the insertion of an elongate instrument into a subject. Background technique [0002] Minimally invasive surgical procedures through the use of surgical instruments are increasingly used as an alternative to traditional surgical procedures. In fact, technological advances have provided miniaturized tools and implements that can be inserted into subjects by surgical instruments, such as catheters, to perform various tasks. These tools are often combined with video systems to provide an inside view of the process as it is being performed. [0003] Virtual simulation systems have been developed for training medical professionals to perform these types of procedures. These simulation systems are designed to provide interactive training by producing realistic simulated operating conditions through a combination of hardware c...
