Problems solved by technology

Typically, contactless protocols allow small transactions to be paid without additional cardholder verification, but larger payments require cardholder verification if allowed
This presents processing and security challenges for wearable devices with limited user interfaces

Embodiment Construction

[0021] Specific examples of the present disclosure will be described below. Embodiments of the present disclosure are particularly relevant to four-party payment transaction schemes, but embodiments of the present disclosure may also be provided for other payment models and payment transaction schemes. For convenience, we will first refer to figure 1 Describe a typical four-party model or four-party payment transaction scheme. The diagram illustrates the entities present in the model and the interactions that occur between them.

[0022] Typically, card schemes—payment networks linked to payment cards—are based on one of two models: the three-party model (adopted by American Express) or the four-party model (adopted by Visa and Mastercard). For the purposes of this document, the quadrilateral model 100 will be described in more detail below.

[0023] The four-party model can be used as the basis for a transaction network. For each transaction, the model includes four entit...

Abstract

A method of operating a transaction device to perform a contactless transaction with a terminal 3 of a transaction system is described. The method comprises the following steps: determining if the transaction device has associated with it a mechanism for providing user verification at the device, and if there is an associated user verification mechanism, transacting with the terminal 3 according to a first transaction protocol, and if there is no associated user verification mechanism, transacting with the terminal 3 according to a second transaction protocol. This approach is particularly suitable for use with transaction devices implemented as wearable devices 1. A suitable wearable device 1 and software for programming such a wearable device are also described.

Description

[0001] Cross References to Related Applications [0002] This application claims the benefit and priority of European Patent Application No. 1702795.4 filed on February 21, 2017. The entire disclosure of the above application is incorporated herein by reference. technical field [0003] The present disclosure relates to contactless interaction systems, devices and methods. It is particularly relevant for wearable devices suitable for contactless interactions, such as payments based on contactless transaction protocols. Background technique [0004] Wearable devices are increasingly used to provide functionality to users both through processing capabilities in the wearable devices and through interaction with other digital devices. While some wearables have extended networking capabilities (using cellular phones or 802.11-based wireless networking protocols such as WiFi), others are only suitable for short-range interactions using Bluetooth or near-field communication proto...
