The present invention relates to a system and method for authenticating a sleeve, said system and method comprising: reading a unique identifier UID and a unique authentication string UAS stored on a data storage medium associated with the sleeve; A method for said UAS on said data storage medium, generating a test unique authentication string TUAS or a test unique identifier TUID based on said UID or said UAS read from said data storage medium, respectively; and comparing said TUAS or the TUID with the UAS or the UID read from the data storage medium to determine if the sleeve is authentic.
