Embodiment Construction

[0020] refer to figure 1 and figure 2 , depicts a molten metal filtering device 11 made of refractory material that provides a flow path for molten metal, the inner surface of which defines inverted, truncated quadrilateral pyramidal sides. The filter housing 12 is formed within the filter device 11 . Within the filter housing 12 , horizontal dividers 13 extend from the side walls 14 . In one edge portion of the horizontal partition 13 , the vertical partition wall 15 integrally protrudes upward while being separated from the opposite side wall 16 . A horizontal divider 13 and a vertical divider wall 15 divide the filter housing 12 into two halves.

[0021] The horizontal partition 13 has a generally quadrangular filter arrangement hole 17, the inner wall of which converges downward. In the filter placement hole 17, an optional filter frame 18 is formed of a refractory material such as refractory bricks in a pattern surrounding an empty space in the shape of an inverted, ...

Abstract

The invention discloses a molten metal filter box. The filter box includes a filter housing provided in a flow path for molten metal. A horizontal partition is disposed within the filter housing and has at least one filter receiving passage. A filter medium in the shape of a substantially flat plate is positioned within the filter receiving passage and below an inflow path of the molten metal. Thefilter medium includes a hole. A filter handling tool is disposed within the hole. The filter handling tool can optionally include a handle secured to the molten metal filter box to suspend the filter medium. Advantageously, the filter medium can be removed by grasping the filter handling tool and removing the filter medium.

Description

Background technique [0001] The present exemplary embodiment relates to an apparatus for filtering molten metal. It finds particular application in connection with tools for installing, removing and positioning filter media and is described with particular reference hereto. However, it should be understood that the present exemplary embodiment can also be modified to other similar applications. [0002] Molten metal, especially molten aluminum, often contains entrained solids that are detrimental to the final cast metal product. These entrained solids show up as inclusions in the final cast product after the molten metal solidifies, resulting in a final product with reduced toughness or poor mirror finish and anodization properties. Inclusions can come from a variety of sources. For example, inclusions may originate from surface oxide films. In addition, inclusions may originate from insoluble impurities such as carbides, borides and other impurities originating from corro...
