Problems solved by technology

However, since the urethra is a necessary passage for draining urine from the bladder, the urethra cannot be completely blocked for several weeks
Furthermore, if normal urethral tissue unrelated to the stricture is dilated for prolonged periods, additional damage to otherwise healthy urethral tissue may occur

Embodiment Construction

[0031] The present invention relates to a medical device for dilating a urethral stricture for a prolonged period of time. Positioning of the device within the urethra will be performed following cystoscopic and / or radiographic evaluation of the urethral stricture. As part of installation of the device in the urinary system of a male patient or any other mammal with the same or similar urinary system, a cystoscope is advanced to the distal end of the urethral stricture. An occlusive balloon catheter, such as that sold under the trademark FOGARTY by Edwards Lifesciences Corporation (Irvine, CA) with distance markings on the catheter, is advanced through the stricture into the bladder. Once in the bladder, the balloon is inflated and pulled against the bladder neck by catheter markers approximately the distance from the bladder neck to the distal end of the urethral stricture. Optionally, the balloon is partially deflated to draw the device closer, which allows a user, such as ...

Abstract

A medical device for dilating urethral strictures comprises a urethral catheter disposed inside a slidable sheath. The device includes a localizing balloon and one or more dilating balloons capable ofexpanding radially outward to mechanically expand the urethral stricture. In certain embodiments, the device is adjustable in order to position the location of the one or more dilating balloons of the device relative to the urethral stricture of a patient.

Description

[0001] Cross References to Related Applications [0002] This application claims priority to and benefit of U.S. Provisional Patent Application No. 62 / 542,051 filed August 7, 2017, the entire contents of which are incorporated herein by reference. technical field [0003] The present invention relates to a medical device for dilating urethral strictures. Background technique [0004] Urethral stricture is a narrowing of the urethra that can lead to painful urination, bladder stone formation, urinary tract infections, and possibly kidney damage. Urethral strictures may be postoperative, device-related, or caused by injury, trauma, infection, radiation, and in many cases the etiology cannot be determined. Urethral strictures range from mildly symptomatic short, soft narrowing of the urethra to rigid paraurethral strictures that require invasive reconstructive surgery or urinary diversion. Urethral strictures occur at different locations along the lumen of the urethra, depend...
