Embodiment Construction

[0026] BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF THE DRAWINGS Figure 1 is a schematic diagram showing the relevant components of a communications switch including an example of a system for providing control information to a control memory according to a preferred embodiment of the present invention. The communication switch 2 is a modular switch, also called a distributed switch, which includes several switching modules. For clarity, only three switching modules 3-5, Module A, Module B and Module C are shown. Each switch module mainly includes several control stores CS, but for the sake of clarity and simplicity, only one control store is shown in each switch module. Switching modules A, B and C contain control memories 15, 16 and 17, respectively. In this illustrated example, the switching modules B and C serve as the input interfaces of the whole switch 2 and receive the input data DATA IN of the switch 2 (data in). Outputs OUT of switching modules B and C are connected to input IN of switchi...

Abstract

The invention relates to a system for providing control information from a control system to a number of control stores in a switch. The system comprises a control point which receives control information for distribution to predetermined control stores. The control information for a point-to-point connection includes a first control code (C1) and a second control code (C2). The system further comprises a first link providing the first control code (C1) to a first control store, a number of selectively active links, each of which provides, when active, the second control code (C2) from the control point to a respective further control store, and circuitry for activating one of the selectively active links in response to the first control code (C1).

Description

technical field [0001] The present invention relates generally to telecommunications and methods and systems for providing control information to control memory in a communications switch. Background technique [0002] In a circuit-switched communications switch, point-to-point connections are usually established under the control of a control system that places appropriate control memories in the switch fabric to communicate with A circuit is established between a predetermined number of output locations. [0003] In distributed or modular communication switches, the control system typically needs to provide control information to more than one control memory in the switch for each point-to-point connection. In such a distributed switch the control memory associated with a point-to-point connection is usually installed in the different switching modules in the switch. The usual procedure is for the traffic control software in the control system to interface with the contr...
