Problems solved by technology

True sound optimization for a room can be a difficult process for home users as there is no real guidance on the best sound response for a given room
Users may spend a significant amount of time listening to music from each channel of the speaker system and adjusting volume levels to create the desired sound
As a result, most modern home surround sound systems are not well optimized for their room as this is a time consuming process without a clear method
Also, unlike a concert setup, continuous sound optimization is currently not possible for home users, as most users would rather simply listen to media played through speakers than focus on changing audio levels

Embodiment Construction

[0031] Although the following detailed description contains many specific details for purposes of illustration, any person of ordinary skill in the art will appreciate that many changes and modifications to the following details are within the scope of the invention. Accordingly, the exemplary embodiments of the present invention described below are set forth without loss of generality and without implying limitations to the claimed invention.

[0032] introduction

[0033] Aspects of the present disclosure relate to optimization and equalization of sound in speaker systems. In particular, the present disclosure relates to the optimization of the sound of a surround sound type speaker system having two or more speakers not worn by the user. Typically, in a surround-sound-type speaker system, each speaker is connected to a master controller, sometimes called an amplifier, but it could also take the form of a computer or game console. Each speaker unit in a surround sound sy...

Abstract

Aspects of the present disclosure relate to techniques for adjusting room sound levels, the techniques comprising: driving a speaker with a known waveform; detecting sound waves from the speaker with at least two microphones, wherein the at least two microphones are using said known waveform and said sound waves detected by said at least two microphones and said known orientation of said at least two microphones to generate room sound dynamics; applying a filter to adjust the sound level to account for the room sound dynamics. The room sound dynamics may be the speaker layout of the room, the room impulse response, the distance or angle of each speaker from the center of the room, or other physical constraints that may affect the user's perception of sound from the sound system.

Description

technical field [0001] The present disclosure relates to audio signal processing and sound localization. In particular, aspects of the disclosure relate to equalization and optimization of sound in multi-speaker systems. Background technique [0002] Humans are able to discern the source location, ie, distance and direction, of sounds heard through the ears through a variety of auditory cues related to head and ear geometry and the way sounds are processed in the brain. Surround sound systems attempt to enrich the listener's audio experience by outputting sound from various positions around the listener. [0003] A typical surround sound system utilizes an audio signal having multiple discrete channels that are routed to multiple speakers that may be arranged in a variety of known formats. For example, 5.1 surround sound utilizes five full-range channels and one low-frequency effects (LFE) channel (indicated by numbers before and after the decimal point, respectively). Fo...
