Problems solved by technology

However, proximity switches are prone to wear or misalignment over time and failure
When this happens, the user typically begins to ignore any audio or visual feedback provided by the appliance, making it difficult to detect an open door
Also, when the refrigerated compartment seal begins to fail due to door misalignment or a worn seal assembly, the door may actually close completely, but the appliance does not have the capability to detect the failure
Additionally, many prior art systems do not use any door opening detection or alarm systems, primarily due to cost and reliability considerations

Embodiment Construction

[0026] Reference attached Figure 1-3 , in accordance with various aspects and embodiments of the present disclosure, a system 10 is described for sensing the closure of a refrigerated compartment by sensing and monitoring the pressure in the refrigerated compartment of an appliance 100 . In various embodiments, the appliance 100 in which the system 10 is implemented may include at least one compartment 120, such as a freezer 130 or a refrigerator 140, which is relatively airtight when closed and in which pressure may be sensed. Compartment 120 may include a door 122 or equivalent closure effective to provide a seal from ambient air when door 122 is closed. In various embodiments of the present specification, the disclosed system 10 will refer to the freezer compartment 130 of the appliance 100, but any sealed compartment 120 may be used in the system 10 without departing from the scope of the present disclosure. Additionally, the system 10 may include a controller 200 integr...

Abstract

The present disclosure provides a system for measuring and monitoring closure of a refrigerated compartment of an appliance, including a controller. The controller has at least one input and at least one output for receiving and providing electrical signals to a plurality of electrical components of the appliance. The system includes a pressure sensor for monitoring the compartment to detect the presence of a negative pressure pulse indicative of closure of the compartment.

Description

[0001] Cross References to Related Applications [0002] This application claims the benefit of priority to U.S. Patent Application No. 16 / 024,103, filed June 29, 2018, the entire contents of which are incorporated herein by reference. Background technique [0003] In appliance manufacturing in general, and in the manufacture of refrigerated appliances such as refrigerators, freezers, and ice machines in particular, maintaining a constant operating temperature is critical. In many of these appliances, the freezer and refrigerator doors are designed to seal tightly so that the refrigeration system can operate to efficiently maintain temperature. However, refrigerator and freezer doors often appear to be closed when opened slightly, which naturally causes the appliance to consume excessive power in an attempt to maintain temperature, and often causes food to defrost, spoilage, and frost to accumulate on food, interior compartments, and on the evaporator of the refrigeration sys...
