Embodiment Construction

[0049] Eggshell transmission is spectrally dependent. exist figure 1 A transmission of the eggshell of a typical Cobb chick is shown in . like figure 1 As shown, the relative transmission of light through the eggshell generally increases with increasing wavelength of light, with some variation between about 540-650 nm. Thus, as the wavelength of light increases, more light passes through the eggshell and thus unhatched chicks are exposed to greater light levels.

[0050] Lumens (Lm) are a measure of the total amount of light emitted from a light source as perceived by the human visual system (i.e., luminous flux), while illuminance (Lux) is a measure of the amount of light incident on a given area as perceived by the human visual system, One lux equals one lumen per square meter. According to the paper by Nuboer et al. (Nuboer, J. F. W., et al. (1992). "Artificial lighting in poultry houses: Are photometric units appropriate for describing illumination intensities "Briti...

Abstract

A controller for controlling illumination emitted by lighting elements within an environment comprising animals and a respective filter between each of animal and the lighting elements, the controller configured to: control the lighting elements to emit illumination having a first spectral composition for a first time period to produce, on a first side of the filter, a first level of illumination as experienced by a visual system of the animals; control the lighting elements to emit illumination having a second, different spectral composition for a second, subsequent time period to produce, on the first side of the filter, a second, different level of illumination as experienced by the visual system of the animals; and control the lighting elements to emit illumination throughout the first and second time periods to maintain, on a second side of the filter, a minimum level of illumination as experienced by a visual system of the animals.

Description

technical field [0001] The present disclosure relates to controllers and lighting systems for controlling illumination emitted by one or more lighting elements within an environment. Background technique [0002] Studies have shown that lighting animal eggs (i.e., eggs containing unborn baby animals) can improve Circadian rhythms before birth. A circadian rhythm is any biological process that follows a daily cycle of approximately 24 hours. Circadian rhythms allow animals, including birds, to anticipate and prepare for periodic environmental changes. For example, circadian rhythms are important in determining the sleeping and feeding patterns of animals. Circadian rhythms are often associated with light and darkness in an animal's environment. It has also been shown that lighting animal eggs, especially bird eggs, reduces stress levels, reduces incubation time and improves chick development. [0003] An incubator is a facility in which eggs (eg, bird eggs) are incubated...
