Embodiment Construction

[0023] As an initial matter, in order to clearly describe the present disclosure, it will be necessary to select certain terminology when referring to and describing relevant machine components within a gas turbine. In doing so, common industry terminology will be used and adopted, where possible, in a manner consistent with its accepted meaning. Unless otherwise indicated, such terms should be given the broadest interpretation consistent with the context of the present application and the scope of the appended claims. Those of ordinary skill in the art will appreciate that several different or overlapping terms may often be used to refer to a particular component. An object that may be described herein as a single part may comprise multiple components and be referred to in another context as consisting of multiple components. Alternatively, an object that may be described herein as comprising multiple components may be referred to elsewhere as a single part.

Abstract

A method for repairing a part and the resulting are disclosed. The method includes positioning a plug (50) having an inner braze element (52) coupled thereto into a cavity (46, 204) defined by an internal surface of a component (40). The cavity (46, 204) has a circular cross-section at the external surface (42) of the component (40). The plug (50) completely fills the circular cross-section and the inner braze element (52) is within the cavity (46, 204). A braze paste (56, 58) is positioned at least partially around the plug (50) at the external surface (42). The component (40) is positioned such that the inner braze element (52) is above the plug (50). The component (40) is subjected to a thermal cycle to melt the inner braze element (52) around the plug (50), completely sealing the cavity (46, 204) by forming a metallurgical bond (59, 66) with the plug (50) and the internal surface of the component (40). During the thermal cycle the braze paste (56, 58) is melted to form a metallurgical bond (59, 66) with the plug (50) and external surface (42).

Description

Background technique [0001] The present disclosure relates generally to industrial machine part repair or fabrication, and more particularly to superalloy parts having circular cross-sectional openings on the outer surface. [0002] Hard-to-weld (HTW) alloys, such as nickel-based superalloys and certain aluminum-titanium alloys, due to their γ' and various geometric constraints, will be difficult to join when the γ' phase is present in a volume fraction greater than about 30%, which May occur when the aluminum or titanium content exceeds about 3%. As used herein, "HTW alloys" are alloys that exhibit liquefaction, thermal and strain age cracking and are therefore unsuitable for welding. [0003] Non-weldable (NW) alloys are generally precipitation hardenable or solid-solution strengthened alloys which are practically non-weldable in industrial settings and on an industrial scale, only under excessively extreme conditions, and are therefore generally considered non-weldable of...
