For example, melanin acts as an antioxidant to help prevent retinal diseases such as age-related macular degeneration. Determining the RPE of the eye and the concentration of melanin in the choroid may also be important in determining the treatment of ocular diseases. For example, if an individual has abnormally high concentrations or levels of melanin within the RPE, this may be useful in treating the eye (especially retina) causing unintended uplift heating and consequent tissue destruction.
