Embodiment 1

[0421] Example 1 - Method for treating cancer

[0422] A human patient is identified by a medical practitioner as having a cancer (eg, lung, colon, breast, brain, liver, pancreatic, skin, or blood cancer) that excretes soluble TNFR or soluble IL-2R. The patient is administered a composition comprising particles (described herein) that bind to and sequester soluble TNFR or IL-2R in an amount effective to treat cancer. Optionally, the patient is administered a "maintenance dose" of the composition to maintain inhibition of the action of soluble TNFR or IL-2R, thereby continuing to enhance immune surveillance of cancer in the patient.

Embodiment 2

[0423] Example 2 - Method of detoxifying a person

[0424] There are human patients with symptoms of toxicity associated with botulinum toxin. The patient is administered a composition comprising particles (described herein) that bind to and sequester soluble botulinum toxin in an amount effective to ameliorate one or more symptoms associated with toxicity.

Embodiment 3

[0425] Example 3 - Method for treating viral infections

[0426] Human patients are identified as having HIV-1 infection by a medical practitioner. The patient is administered a composition comprising particles (described herein) that bind to and sequester soluble HIV-1 virions in an amount effective to reduce viral titers in the patient's circulation. The patient is given a "maintenance dose" of the composition to maintain the reduction in HIV-1 virion titer, thereby suppressing infection in the patient, and reducing the likelihood of viral transmission to one another.

Abstract

The present invention relates to compositions and methods related to scavenging particulates. The present invention provides scavenging particles, methods for treating a subject suffering from cancer, an autoimmune disease, a neurodegenerative disease, methods for promoting healthy aging in a subject, methods for treating a metabolic disorder in a subject, and methods for increasing muscle mass in a subject. The present disclosure provides, among other things, compositions that bind to and inhibit the biological activity of soluble biomolecules and pharmaceutical compositions thereof. Compositions may include a plurality of particles that specifically bind to a target, such as a soluble biomolecule or biomolecule on the surface of a pathogen, to inhibit the target (or pathogen) from interacting with other molecules or cells. The disclosure also provides certain applications (e.g., therapeutic applications) where the compositions are useful.
