Problems solved by technology

Larger devices may not fit through the introducer sheath and valve, and after the larger device is deployed, smaller devices may not fit through the introducer sheath alongside the larger device catheter
Attempts to introduce large or multiple devices through a single conventional introducer sheath can result in failure of the introducer sheath and valve during insertion
[0005] Because of this challenge, some physicians may choose not to use cardiovascular support devices, such as blood pumps, when performing vascular interventions because of the difficulty in preparing multiple access sites to the vasculature

Abstract

A blood pump assembly comprising: an introducer sheath (100) having a proximal end and a distal end; a pump body (120), the pump body (120) extending within the introducer sheath barrel; and a catheter (121) that interfaces with the pump body and extends proximally through the introducer sheath. In the rest state, the introducer sheath barrel forms an elliptical cross-section that is sized to enclose the catheter and the medical device. When the pump body is in a restricted state in the introducer sheath cylinder, the cross section of the introducer sheath cylinder is circular. The extensibility of the introducer sheath allows larger medical devices to pass through the introducer sheath while still allowing other devices to be inserted through the introducer sheath after the pump has been directed therethrough. The perimeter of the oval cross section of the introducer sheath tube is equal to the perimeter of the round cross section of the introducer sheath tube.

Description

[0001] CROSS-REFERENCE TO RELATED APPLICATIONS [0002] This application claims the benefit of priority from US Provisional Application No. 62 / 907,927, filed September 30, 2019, the contents of which are incorporated herein by reference. Background technique: [0003] Blood pumps are often used in combination with other medical devices to support and treat patients with cardiovascular disease. Doctors can perform high-risk percutaneous coronary intervention (HRPCI) while utilizing a blood pump to provide heart support during the procedure. The insertion of blood pumps and other devices required for such procedures typically requires two to three separate access sites into the arterial system. Each additional access site into the vasculature requires more time to prepare the access site, additional introducers, closures, and other devices, and can lead to complications at the surgical site. Due to additional blood vessel (vascular) problems, some patients with cardiovascular...
