Problems solved by technology

[0004] However, existing mirror therapy devices have limitations
Current designs are generally limited to static devices for mirror therapy
Also, it is often very inconvenient for people to commute to and from the clinic on a regular basis
Many patients live a considerable distance from the clinic, which makes regular visits difficult
Travel to and from the clinic will incur a fee
Additionally, many patients are unable to travel on their own and require assistance from nursing staff
Factors such as limited clinician time, transportation difficulties for frail subjects, and infrequent treatment sessions all affect the efficacy of the treatment
Another limitation is the lack of traceable progress in current devices
In addition, current post-stroke treatment support typically ceases within 12 months of hospital discharge and does not allow for an ongoing treatment plan

Embodiment Construction

[0046] Referring to the drawings, there is shown a mirror image treatment device according to the present invention, generally designated by the reference numeral 1 . The portable mirror therapy device 1 includes a rigid divider panel 2 attached to a base unit 3 that supports the divider panel 2 in an upright position to define two adjacent limbs on opposite sides of the divider panel 2 Accommodating space A, B ( figure 2 ). A mirror 4 is mounted on one face of the divider panel 2 . A clamp, generally indicated by reference numeral 5, mounted at the lower end of the divider panel 2 cooperates with the underside 6 of the base unit 3 for rigidly fixing the base unit 3 to a support such as a table or work surface. The exercise device 8 is mounted on the apparatus 1 and contains limb engaging members, in this case including a handle 9 at the mirror side of the divider panel 2 .

Abstract

A portable mirroring therapy device (1) comprises a rigid divider panel (2) attached to a base unit (3) supporting the divider panel (2) in a vertical position to define two adjacent limb accommodation spaces (A, B) on opposite sides of the divider panel (2). A mirror (4) is mounted on one face of the divider panel (2). A clamp mounted at the lower end of the divider panel (2), which is generally represented by a figure mark (5), cooperates with the lower side (8) of the base unit (3) for fixing the base unit (3) on a support such as a table or a worktop. An exercise device (8) is mounted on the device (1) and comprises limb-engaging members, in which case the limb-engaging members comprise a handle (9) at the mirror side of the divider panel (2). The exercise device (8) is a resistance load training system and comprises a load cord (10) extending from the handle (9) to an associated resistance element (11) mounted within a housing (12) on a side of the divider panel (2) opposite the mirror (4).

Description

[0001] introduction [0002] The present invention relates to a neurotherapeutic device incorporating the use of mirrors for the rehabilitation of weak or absent human subjects and, more particularly, for patients suffering from reduced mobility, chronic neuropathic pain, phantom pain or orthopaedic injury Weak limbs are rehabilitated. These conditions can be the result of a stroke, amputation, partial paralysis or fracture. Background technique [0003] The concept of mirror therapy was originally developed to treat amputees with phantom limb pain, but the therapy has found further use in various neurological and mobility disorders of the limb. Conventional mirror therapy devices are typically designed with a box, housing, or other component for concealing the subject's debilitated limb and mirror. The mirror separates the subject's opposing limbs, with the mirror surface facing the healthy limb. Treatment usually involves the subject moving their healthy limb in front of...
