Abstract

A variable angle beam control apparatus capable of maintaining the same color temperature of a light source regardless of a change in beam angle. A controllable beam device includes a light source having a primary optic that produces a low divergence beam with an inverted angular distribution of correlated color temperature (CCT); and a liquid crystal device having an electrically variable refractive index profile, the liquid crystal device being arranged to receive the light beam and to provide a variable angle light beam.

Description

[0001] This patent application claims priority to US Provisional Patent Application 62 / 907,826, filed on September 30, 2019. technical field [0002] The present invention relates generally to the field of lighting devices, and more particularly to beam shaping devices and methods. Background technique [0003] Most lighting systems today are stable, with fixed parameters (such as intensity, color distribution, and illumination area or angle). More advanced lighting systems, such as light emitting diode (LED) based lighting systems, are providing dynamic modulation of intensity (dimming) as well as color control (defined by the so-called "correlated color temperature" or CCT). Dynamic control of beam shape is extremely rare because it requires the use of bulky, fragile and expensive stepper motors. [0004] PCT application with International Publication No. WO2017041167A1 discloses a liquid crystal (LC) based device capable of dynamically controlling the shape of a light be...
