Embodiment Construction

[0045] The preferred embodiment of the invention will now be described in detail; an example thereof is shown in the accompanying drawings, in which like reference numerals refer to like parts.

[0046] Now see attached picture, figure 1 A printing system is shown comprising a host or host PC 10 connected via a communication cable 24 to an inkjet printer 30 . Host 10 typically includes microprocessor 12 , read only memory (ROM) 14 , random access memory (RAM) 16 , and some type of input / output port 18 . These basic constituent elements are connected together by means of an address bus 20 and a data bus 22 . In many applications, the host computer contains some type of word processing program - it generates data files to be printed, and these data files can be transmitted in a high-level language (HLL) such as PostScript format or a different high-level language such as PCL to the printer 30, or the data can be transmitted in a "bitmap" format that can be directly manipulated...

Abstract

An improved printing system is provided that compresses bitmap print data by determining, per each slice of a swath of the printed page, which one of two different data compression techniques to more efficiently compresses each individual slice, then temporarily stores this compressed data in a memory circuit until needed by the printhead for actual printing of the final output in the form of print media. When using slices containing seven (7) different words per slice, the present invention utilizes a single ''''control bit'''' of a ''''control word'''' to represent each of the data words of the slice.

Description

technical field [0001] This invention relates generally to imaging and printing apparatus and in particular to printers employing printheads having an array of ink ejection nozzles. The invention is disclosed in the form of an inkjet printer that prints print data in swaths - where the swaths consist of a large number of sheets. The printer or the host computer compresses the original bitmap (bitmap) print data of each piece according to at least two different compression techniques to see which technique has a greater compression ratio for each piece, after which the compressed data is temporarily Stored in memory until ready for printing, at which time the individual slices are decompressed according to an appropriate decompression technique so that the image is printed from the original print data. Background technique [0002] Inkjet printers employing arrays of multiple nozzles have been offered for many years, as have other types of printers employing arrays of multip...
