Embodiment Construction

[0018] The following discloses a system for providing immediate image quality feedback to an imaging technician during an imaging examination. As recognized herein, clinical images are not actually necessary for many types of image quality assessments. In contrast, a low-resolution preview image acquired prior to acquiring a high-resolution clinical image in a typical workflow is actually sufficient to perform the evaluation. For example, low-resolution preview images are sufficient to detect image quality issues such as improper patient positioning, improper head angle in brain scans, certain motion artifacts, imaging settings that are too small for anatomical features of interest, blocking medical implants detection, etc.

[0019] The disclosed system is configured to tap an imaging device controller video feed, detect and extract preview images from the video feed, and perform image quality analysis on the extracted preview images. Video feeds can be tapped using a video ...

Abstract

An apparatus (1) for providing image quality feedback during a medical imaging examination comprises at least one electronic processor (20) programmed to: receive a live video feed (17) of a display (6) of an imaging device controller (4) of an imaging device (2) performing the medical imaging examination; extracting a preview image (12) from the live video feed; performing an image analysis (38) on the extracted preview image to determine whether the extracted preview image satisfies a warning criterion; and outputting a warning (30) when the extracted preview image satisfies the warning criteria determined by the image analysis.

Description

technical field [0001] The following generally relates to imaging techniques, image evaluation techniques, image quality determination techniques, real-time feedback techniques, and related techniques. Background technique [0002] Quality management in medical imaging plays an increasingly important role. A common approach is to perform periodic quality checks, where a small subset of the imaging checks performed by the imaging technician are checked to assess quality and provide feedback to the imaging technician. [0003] While retrospective quality assessments provide insight into recurring quality issues, immediate warning about quality issues can enable technicians to repeat imaging procedures as necessary while the patient is still present. Near real-time image quality assessment can be performed using clinical images uploaded to the Plot Archiving and Communication System (PACS) database. However, when uploading clinical images, the patient is often entering the po...
