Embodiment Construction

[0047] refer to figure 1 , which shows a portion of a cardiac rescue device applied to a heart 80 having a left ventricle 82 and a right ventricle 83 . The apparatus includes two cardiac drive devices 10 and 20 fixed on the right ventricle 83 and the left ventricle 82 respectively. from Figure 4 and 5 As best seen, the devices 10 and 20 secured to the right and left ventricle, respectively, differ in shape, but generally have the same structure.

[0048] refer to Figures 2 to 4 , which shows an embodiment of a cardiac drive device particularly suited for placement on the right ventricle. The cardiac drive device 10 has a paddle 11 with a cardiac compression wall 12 adapted to be secured to the surface of the right ventricle in a region, and a distal wall 13 positioned away from the surface of the heart. like figure 2 and 3 As shown, the device 10 is roughly triangular in shape, and the two main walls 12 and 13 are connected together by the peripheral wall 17, from ...

Abstract

A heart actuator device for use in heart assist apparatus, which device includes a paddle-like main body. The main body has a heart compressing wall, which in use is adapted to be affixed to at least a region of heart, and a distal wall, which in use is adapted to be distal that region of the heart. The heart compressing wall is movable in a direction relatively away from the distal wall, so as, in use to compress at least that region of the heart thereby assisting movement of the heart wall.

Description

technical field [0001] The present invention relates to a device and method for salvaging a failed heart. Background technique [0002] Cardiac compression has been used for many years to pressurize a failing heart, and the simplest lifesaving form involves compressing a patient's chest wall. In an emergency, doctors can continue this procedure by manually compressing the failed heart until recovery or additional treatment is administered. [0003] Of course not all patients are in a serious condition, usually the heart damage takes time. But it can also cause heart failure, where the heart cannot maintain sufficient blood circulation to properly supply oxygen to tissues. Heart failure is common in the general public, affecting, for example, 5 million Americans at any one time. Despite advances in cardiology in recent years, patients are still increasing. [0004] Mechanical heart-salvage devices that can be used to pressurize a failing heart have the potential to provid...
