Embodiment Construction

[0044] FIG. 1 is a perspective view of a prior art ceramic bandpass filter. Filter 10 is formed from a ceramic block having surfaces with conductive metal applied thereon and includes top surface 12 , bottom surface 14 , side surfaces 16 and 18 , and end surfaces 20 and 22 . Filter 10 additionally includes parallel cylindrical holes 24 and 26 extending openly between top surface 12 and bottom surface 14 . Areas of the ceramic block surface, such as the top surface or top surface 12, are screen printed in a well-known manner with a conductive metal material such as silver paste to form the metal elements of the filter, leaving bare areas of the ceramic block between the filter elements. ceramic surface material. The printed elements 36 and 38 rise above the top surface of the planar surface 12 of the ceramic block and include input pads 28 and output pads 30 that may wrap around between the top surface 12 and the sides 16 . This surrounding configuration is particularly suita...

Abstract

A method of forming metallization patterns on a block of dielectric material wherein the entire surface area of the dielectric block is encased with a conductive material and unwanted conductive metal is ablatively etched from a designated surface area of the dielectric block to form desired metallized circuit patterns. The invention also comprises a filter and a duplexer formed by the method of the present invention.

Description

technical field [0001] The present invention relates generally to electrical filters, and in particular to so-called radio frequency ceramic filters and antenna duplexers. Background technique [0002] Radio frequency ceramic filters are well known in the art. They consist of blocks of ceramic material coupled with other electronic circuitry, typically via discrete wires, cables, and pins coupled to conductive connection points on the outer surface of the block. They are also used in the construction of duplexers and other electronic components. [0003] Ceramic block filters are used in wireless communication products. The three main process steps in fabricating these filters are: (1) generating the capacitive device pattern, (2) generating the input and output pads, and (3) tuning the filter to the proper operating frequency. The capacitive device pattern on the filter serves to approximate the RF response desired by the user. The function of the generation operation o...
