Embodiment Construction

[0023] SPAESS is designed to collect and store solar energy over a large area of the ground, measured in square miles. Therefore, solar collector panels are designed for continuous manufacture and installation with multiple layers of plastic film laminated together by adhesive, heat, pressure, or other continuous process in which rolls of plastic are Guides and seals the layers in place. These solar collector panels can then simply be coiled into large rolls and transported to the installation site where they are unrolled on the ground.

[0024] figure 1 A cross-section of an embodiment of a solar collector panel 30 thus manufactured is shown in the expanded operating state. The outer film layer 1 preferably consists of a tough plastic film, such as Tedlar and the like, which have a high transmission coefficient for visible light and a low transmission coefficient for infrared light, so that heat cannot be transferred back through the outer film layer 1 . Since the outer ...

Abstract

A solar energy collection system harvests solar energy from large open areas. A length of flexible solar collector (30) is unrolled along a supporting surface (6). An uninsulated base (5) directly contacts the ground or other supporting structure. A plurality of parallel conduits (4), sealed along the length of the flexible base panel, have a high light absorption and a low infrared emission and contain a flowing liquid to be heated by solar energy. A length of a covering material (1) is placed parallel to the base and between the parallel conduits and the sun and sealed to the base panel for containing a low pressure fluid to reduce heat loss from the flowing liquid and to inflate the structure formed by the ground cover and covering material. Heated fluid from the parallel conduits is collected in a header (32) for delivery to a power generating system (35).

Description

[0001] related application [0002] This application claims the benefit of US Provisional Application 60 / 134,642, filed May 10,1999. field of invention [0003] The present invention relates generally to harnessing solar energy to generate thermal energy and, more particularly, to a system for collecting, storing, and utilizing thermal energy generated from incident solar energy. Background technique [0004] At current consumption rates, the energy incident on Earth from the sun in just one day is enough to power humanity for 175 years. One way of harvesting this energy is through photovoltaic panels; but they shut off when the sun goes down. In addition, the available photovoltaic panels are expensive compared to producing electricity from fossil fuels. [0005] Another way to harvest solar energy is to use parabolic mirrors to concentrate sunlight to generate steam in a Rankine cycle for power generation. But this technique is also expensive and labor-intensive, and on...
