[0046] Performance advantages with wetting and emulsifying agents

[0047]To understand the broad applicability of an antifoam over a wide range of systems, it is useful to understand how the antifoam interacts with the foam-forming components of the system. For this purpose we examined the foam behavior of defoamers in combination with wetting or emulsifying agents. Foam density was determined using the Blender foam test at t=0 min and t=10 min using the Waring blender agitation method (30 sec). The results of this test are as follows.

[0048] D /

[0049] As shown in the table above, HTMDDD has better defoaming properties when combined with DOSS compared to all other tested products and the blank. This advantage is demonstrated both by the 10 min data and by the time required for foam collapse. The excellent antifoam properties of HTMDDD and TMDDD are clearly shown by the foam data at t=0 min. The antifoam performance of HTMDDD when combined with primary a...

[0051] Performance Advantages in Industrial Maintenance Coatings

[0052] Quantity (g)

[0053] The grinding part of the formulation refers to the grinding of dry pigments in the presence of a dispersant so that pigment aggregates are broken down by shear into primary particles and dispersed by steric and / or electrostatic stabilization. The defoamer added in the as-ground state is used to control the foam generated during the high shear grinding operation. The grind is then added to a mixture of binder (emulsion) and solvent to thin (thin) the grind with the intent of evenly coloring it into the paint. The defoamer used is added at the letdown step to provide some foam control, followed by the wetting agent / defoamer (HTMDD) to improve wetting, flow and leveling, foam properties, and finally the dried coating general appearance. The use of alkanediols in the letdown portion of the formulation is not intended to limit its use in this step of formulation pre...

[0057] Performance Advantages in Wood Coatings

[0058] Quantity (g)

[0059] advantage

[0060] As seen from the data in the table above, HTMDD exhibited improved foam performance in the above formulations compared to the other additives and the placebo. The wetting performance of HTMDD was quite good (low) compared to blank and better or equal to most of the other additives. Additional advantages were seen in terms of leveling and pinholing compared to blank and certain additives.

Abstract

The present invention pertains to a method for controlling the foaming of a waterborne composition or an industrial process by the incorporation of a foam controlling agent. The method comprises utilizing as the foam controlling agent a compound of the formula: HOR1R3C-CH2n-CR2R4OH. R1 and R2 are independently selected from the group of alkyl radicals having from 3 to 6 carbon atoms. R3 and R4 are independently alkyl radicals having from 1 to 2 carbon atoms. n is an integer from 1 to 6. The compound generates an initial (t=0 min.) or a final (t=10 min.) foamed density at least 30% greater than that of a 0.5 wt % aqueous solution of a 12 mole ethoxylate of a C12-C15 primary alcohol (C12-C15E12) when added at 0.2 wt % to the C12-C15E12 solution. The present invention also pertains to an aqueous composition comprising the foam controlling agent.

Description

field of invention [0001] The present invention relates to the use of alkanediols as foam control agents. Background of the invention [0002] In many applications and industrial processes involving water, the control or elimination of foam is critical to obtaining optimum performance of the application and high efficiency of the process. The importance of foam control and defoaming has received due attention in several applications and industrial processes such as water-based coatings, inks, adhesives and agricultural formulations; industrial processes such as pumping for oil wells, Scrubbing, refining and sterilization of petroleum gas, food technology, pulp and paper technology, fermentation, metal treatment, synthesis of polymers and chemical reagents, wastewater treatment, and fabric dyeing and finishing. [0003] Foam control agents are widely used in the production and processing of polymers because foam can lead to reduced throughput, efficienc...
