Embodiment Construction

[0043] Figure 1 shows an embodiment of a light curing device according to the invention for curing a light curable composite such as a dental composite. In FIG. 1 , apparatus 10 includes a housing 12 for curing operations. Housing 12 is generally gun-shaped and includes a handle portion 14 and a barrel portion 16 . An operator, such as a dentist, holds the housing 12 around the handle portion 14 with the barrel portion 16 oriented towards the tooth surface (or other working surface) and the composite to be cured (not shown). To cure fillings and dental composites, the dentist typically places at least a portion of the barrel into the patient's mouth with the barrel's emitting end 17 aimed at a particular tooth. The handle portion 14 includes an operational trigger switch 18 which is connected to a power source 20 and / or control circuit 24 for selectively operating the device and powering a light emitting element 32 to generate a curing beam, as will be discussed below. The p...

Abstract

An instrument 10 and method for curing light-curable compounds in the mouth of a patient, the instrument comprising a housing 1 2 and a plurality 32 of solid state, light-emitting elements 30 on a substrate 34 supported by the housing 12. The elements 30 form a collective array 32 on the substrate 34 operable for collectively emitting light having wavelengths within a narrow band of wavelengths. An optical focusing device 44 is positioned to intercept the light emitted by the array 32 of elements and includes a non-imaging optical device which is operable for collimating the light from the array into a beam to be directed onto a compound for curing the compound. A disposable sleeve 50 covers the housing and array and may incorporate the optical focusing device. The sleeve 50 is removed and discarded after use to eliminate the need to autoclave the instrument.

Description

[0001] related application [0002] This application is a continuation of US Application No. 09 / 009,205, filed January 20, 1998, entitled "Apparatus and Method for Curing Materials Utilizing Radiation," which is hereby incorporated by reference in its entirety. technical field [0003] This invention relates to the use of radiation to cure materials, and more particularly to the use of light to cure tooth coatings and filling composites. Background technique [0004] Curable bonding compounds and joining or filling compounds are widely used to join the surfaces of objects together or to fill gaps, openings or holes in the surfaces of objects. This curable compound is generally treated in semi-solid form on the surface of an object, positioned, and then hardens or cures in place to a stronger permanent state. Hardening or curing of useful compounds is generally a chemical process that is facilitated or driven by one or more curing conditions or factors. For example, the cur...
