Abstract

The present invention relates to an activator for use in a two-component hair relaxer system. The activator includes an alkaline material such as calcium hydroxide mixed with mineral oil. Preferably, the activator exists as a suspension, emulsion or gel. Hair relaxer systems including a mineral oil containing activator and a cream base, hair relaxers made by mixing these two components, and methods of using such systems to straighten hair are also described.

Description

technical field [0001] This invention relates to mineral oil activators. Background technique [0002] A no lye hair relaxer is a hair relaxer that does not contain sodium hydroxide or potassium hydroxide. Instead, it typically uses a base such as guanidine hydroxide. Since guanidine hydroxide is not long-term stable in aqueous solution, it must be freshly prepared immediately before use. Guanidine hydroxide is usually prepared by mixing an inorganic alkaline earth metal hydroxide with an aqueous solution of a guanidinium salt, the anion of which is precipitated by the cation of the alkaline earth metal hydroxide. In commercial products of this type, calcium hydroxide and guanidine carbonate are usually used to prepare guanidine hydroxide. [0003] Two-component systems for making and using guanidine hydroxide loosening agents are well documented in the patent literature, such as that disclosed in, for example, US Patent No. 4,304,244. Other patents describing two-compon...
