Abstract

The present invention relates to a method of testing whether a facility is effective in preventing the spread of an infectious disease by a) releasing in or near the facility an effective amount of a biological tracer to simulate the spread of a pathogen that causes the infectious disease; and b) Detecting the presence or amount of biological tracers to determine the spread of biological tracers in the environment of the facility. The present invention also provides a method and apparatus for generating aerosols that simulate human sneezing and coughing, so as to more realistically determine the spread of infectious diseases from such sources.

Description

[0001] This application claims priority to US Provisional Patent Applications Serial No. 60 / 493,182, filed August 7, 2003, and US Provisional Patent Applications Serial No. 60 / 510,207, filed October 10, 2003. field of invention [0002] In order to prevent cross-infection in hospitals caused by aerosols generated by patients, medical interventions or other activities, each ward and even each bed should be individually ventilated. The present invention provides methods for determining whether the above conditions are met. In addition, the present invention provides a new tool for experimental simulation, determination of the spread of respiratory infectious disease outbreaks and tracking of contamination sources of surface, groundwater and air. [0003] The present invention further provides portable and lightweight apparatus and methods for generating aerosols loaded with viral and bacterial simulants to simulate the ejection of lung gases produced by humans during activities ...
