Embodiment Construction

[0019] A Device for Insomnia Assessment and Treatment (IATD) has been developed. In various embodiments, the IATD can be used to provide computerized or automated sleep assessments, and sleep behavioral treatments such as non-pharmacological or psychotherapeutic treatments for insomnia. Set up IATD to assist users to follow a training course for insomnia assessment and treatment, which has been automated and implemented in the IATD device. For example, the IATD can automatically and continuously measure a patient's sleep behavior, generate prompts to train the user to get up if they haven't fallen asleep in a certain period of time (this is stimulus control), and signal the user when to go to bed and when to wake up (This is sleep restriction). The program implemented by IATD is based on established scientifically based sleep assessment and behavioral strategies using stimulus control and sleep restriction. Users can use IATD as a self-help insomnia treatment program or unde...

Abstract

The present invention provides a method of automated sleep behavior modification for insomnia and other sleep problems using a computerized treatment system including: determining a baseline sleep pattern of a user and storing in the system data indicative of the baseline sleep pattern; generating a sleep behavior regimen based on the stored sleep pattern data and a behavior modification algorithm, wherein the algorithm generates sleep inducement behavior prompts; prompting the user to perform a predetermined sleep inducement behavior at a time determined by the regimen; tracking the sleep behavior of the user and storing data indicative of the tracked sleep behavior; modifying the regimen based on the tracked sleep behavior, and prompting the user to perform the predetermined sleep inducement behavior at a time determined by the modified regimen.

Description

technical field [0001] The present invention relates to an Insomnia Assessment and Treatment Apparatus (IATD) and method that assists insomnia sufferers by adjusting their behavioral norms. Background technique [0002] Insomnia affects approximately 30 million people in the United States. People with insomnia rarely seek medical treatment from a health care professional. Those who consult with their physicians often receive treatments such as medication, which have little long-term efficacy and sometimes exacerbate insomnia. There is a need for a system for treating insomnia that has long-term efficacy and can be used by patients whether or not they seek medical treatment from a healthcare professional. [0003] Traditional insomnia treatment typically includes sleep assessment and insomnia treatment. Sleep assessments determine the patient's sleep patterns and sleep periods. Using sleep assessments, health care professionals typically recommend an insomnia treatment th...
