Embodiment Construction

[0034] The present invention proposes a new protocol for transmitting optical signals according to an optical burst switching scheme, which aims at transmitting optical signals efficiently and has a lower blocking probability than JET. Additionally, a protocol is provided that implements an improved contention strategy than the protocols presented so far. For this purpose, a "just in time of arrival" protocol is proposed.

[0035] A better understanding of the new JAT protocol can be gained by observing Figure 4 The control packet structure 400 in JET can be seen. The known structure comprises a control packet headed by a guard time block 404 and a synchronization block 406 . The control packet itself 402 consists of a flag 408 , a wavelength ID 410 , a class of service (CoS) field 412 , an offset time 414 , a burst size field 416 and a cyclic redundancy code (CRC) field 418 .

[0036] In particular, note that a burst size field 416 (shown here as an 8-bit field) exists in...

Abstract

Transmitting an optical signal in an optical burst switching network having a data burst signal and a control signal representing the optical signal. A header packet of the control signal is generated having information indicating an arrival time of the data burst signal and no information regarding a burst size of the data burst signal. The control signal, with the header packet generated is transmitted through the optical burst switching network.

Description

technical field [0001] The invention relates to a method and a device for transmitting optical signals in an optical burst switching network using time of arrival. Background technique [0002] The amount of raw bandwidth available on fiber optic links has increased dramatically with the advancement of Dense Wavelength Division Multiplexing (DWDM). In order to efficiently utilize this bandwidth in a cost-effective manner for IP traffic, an appropriate all-optical transport method must be developed. This delivery method must be able to handle asynchronous bursts of traffic by rapidly provisioning resources while also minimizing the use of optical buffers. [0003] Optical Burst Switching (OBS) is one such method for directly transferring traffic over a bufferless optical core network. In an optical burst switched network, bursts of data consisting of a plurality of packets are switched all-optical over the network. [0004] The following ideal OBS technique decouples the d...
