[0090] Overview
[0091] In the human heart, the coronary sinus is the largest vein. The coronary sinus typically extends adjacent to the left atrium of the heart at a distance of approximately 5 to 10 centimeters during most of its travel within the atrioventricular groove. Notably, the coronary sinus extends substantially adjacent to the posterior perimeter of the mitral valve annulus for a portion of its length such as typically approximately 7-9 centimeters. The present invention takes advantage of this fact. More specifically, by deploying a novel device within the coronary sinus adjacent to the posterior leaflet of the mitral valve, the natural curvature of the coronary sinus can be altered, thereby moving the posterior annulus anteriorly, thereby improving leaflet closure , thereby reducing mitral regurgitation.
