Embodiment Construction

[0014] figure 1 A temporal interpolation unit 100 according to one embodiment of the present invention is illustrated. will now refer to figure 1 and 2 The time interpolation unit 100 will now be described. An interlaced video input stream 102 is input into a de-interlacer 104 . The deinterlacer 104 deinterlaces the input video stream and generates a deinterlaced video stream. The de-interlaced video stream is provided to the temporal interpolator 106 . Time interpolator 106 generates a plurality of correctly time interpolated frames between each original frame of a conventional interlaced video signal. The temporal interpolator 106 performs motion estimation on the received frames. The calculated motion vectors can be scaled to any position between two received frames, enabling motion compensation using these scaled vectors to build a motion compensated frame at an arbitrary (desired) position in time. Those skilled in the art will understand that the temporal interpol...

Abstract

A method and an apparatus for processing an interlaced video signal is disclosed. First, the interlaced video signal is de-interlaced. A plurality of temporal interpolated frames between original frames of the interlaced video signal are created using motion compensated temporal interpolation. The plurality of temporal interpolated frames and original frames are temporal filtered to produce an output video signal.

Description

technical field [0001] The present invention relates to a video encoder / decoder, and more particularly to methods and apparatus that can be used in low bitrate video compression applications. Background technique [0002] The TV standard, which has been in use for decades, uses a so-called interlaced video signal. This method allows the bandwidth required for transmission to be doubled, which in general does not include picture quality. At most times during a sequence, relatively high resolution is still provided (when the motion is not too intense), but at moments with a lot of motion, such as sporting events, the frame rate (50 or 60 Hz) is still relatively high enough that Prevents annoying shivering effects. [0003] The transmission of full-motion, high-definition digital video signals is an important issue due to the large amount of data inherent in digital video. More specifically, each digital image frame is a static image formed by an array of pixels at a particu...
