Transportation base load unitizer

a technology unitizer, which is applied in the direction of flexible covers, wrapping/bundling articles, containers, etc., can solve the problems of affecting the environmental impact of disposal, affecting the use of base load unitizer, and occupying considerable space for storage, etc., and achieves convenient folding or compacting and subsequently storage, low profile, and less volume

Benefits of technology

The invention provides a load unitizer that can be easily placed around a load and protect it from damage. The unitizer can be in the form of a sleeve or sheath that can be expanded or contracted by tensioning or relaxing an elastic section. The elastic section can be planar or flat, making it easy to fold or compact and store. The load unitizer can be repeatedly used and provides greater protection to the load compared to other devices of the prior art. The method of using the load unitizer involves elastically deforming the elastic section around the load to hold it together as a unit. Overall, the load unitizer and method provide an efficient and effective solution for protecting and unitizing loads on transportation bases.

Problems solved by technology

However, they are very expensive and may require occasional human intervention.
Storage takes up considerable space.
Disposal has detrimental environmental impact.
They and the goods they are covering can easily become torn on sharp edges during transportation.
For foodstuffs in paper bags, for example, if one bag of the unit load is torn open, then the entire unit load or pallet of goods must be thrown away at great expense.
Such fastening means can add weight, bulk and cost to the device and can become tangled when being stored.

Embodiment Construction

[0028]A transportation base load unitizer and a method of unitizing a load on a transportation base, such as a pallet (for example, of the pallet type described in the background to the invention section above) will now be described with reference to FIG. 1.

[0029]In this example, the unitizer 8 is in the form of a sleeve or tube open at both ends. It includes protection sections each made of a sheet 10 (in this example, there are four sheets). Each sheet is connected to a neighbouring or adjacent sheet by an elastic section 12. The interconnecting sheets and protection sections form the sides of the sleeve.

[0030]In this example, the elastic sections each take the form of a plurality of substantially planar elastic strips 13. The elastic strips are equally spaced apart axially between adjacent sheets. The sheets and the elastic sections are made from different materials. The sheets are relatively less elastic than the elastic sections. In this example, they are made from inelastic ma...

Abstract

A transportation base load unitizer (8) for unitizing a load (14) on a transportation base (16), such as a pallet. The unitizer (8) comprises at least one elastic section (12) and at least one protection section (10) for providing greater protection to a load (14) on a transportation base than the at least one elastic section (12). The unitizer (8) is configured such that, in use, the unitizer (8) holds together as a unit and protects a load (14) on a transportation base (16).

Description

BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION[0001]The present invention relates to a transportation base load unitizer and a method of unitizing a load on a transportation base, such as a pallet.[0002]Pallets are flat structures for carrying goods to form a unit load of the goods. The goods forming the load may be, for example, foodstuffs or other products.[0003]Pallets are typically made of wood. They include a deck (usually square or near-square) on which a load is placed. The deck is supported by an arrangement that allows forks of a forklift or pallet jack to lift and transport it. The pallets including their load can be transported on to and off from lorries, which carry unit loads on them long distances. Many standard configurations of pallet are used such as international organisation of standardisation (ISO) pallets and Euro (CEN) pallets. These typically have dimensions of between 800 mm to 1300 mm by between 800 mm to 1300 mm.[0004]Stretch wrap or shrink wrap is typically wound around good...
