[0058] DETAILED DESCRIPTION OF THE PREFERRED EMBODIMENT

[0059] As shown in the accompanying drawings for illustrative purposes, the present invention resides in a method of effectively mixing liquid and / or solid-to-liquid streams including treatment additives to provide uniform distribution of liquids, contaminants, chemicals and dissolved gases, which can be controlled. As described more fully herein, although the invention is practiced in a mixing system that includes a hydrocyclone mixing device, it is not its components that are of particular importance to the invention, but the fine adjustment of those components to Effective delivery of a specified amount of mixing energy into the body of liquid to achieve uniform distribution of treatment additive liquid and solids and contaminant liquid. Effective use of the present invention results in the ability to use less processing chemicals and produce cleaner liquids than other devices that can be produced with much less mec...

Abstract

To optimally mix treatment additives to a contaminated liquid, treatment additives are selected. A mixing energy requirement of the contaminated liquid and treatment additives is then determined by mixing the treatment additives over a range of time and mixing speeds, and measuring turbidity to determine the mixing time and speed which results in the lowest turbidity. A low mixing energy requirement requires a lower mixing time and mixing speed than a higher mixing energy requirement. The contaminated liquid and selected treatment additives are then directed into a mixing system (32) including at least one hydrocyclone (20). Each hydrocyclone (20) has an inlet aspect ratio, a barrel length and diameter selected based upon the mixing energy requirement determination. Altering the aspect ratio, diameter, and length of the hydrocyclone results in different mixing speeds and mixing time, which can be optimized for the given contaminated liquid and treatment additives.

Description

technical field [0001] This invention relates to the treatment of polluted liquids, such as waste water, and in particular to methods of mixing treatment additives into polluted liquids. Background of the invention [0002] In treating polluted water from agricultural or industrial processes, such as wastewater, etc., treatment additives must be mixed with the polluted water to effectively remove the contaminants. For example, in flotation systems where contaminants are removed by a process of coalescing gas bubbles that float to the surface and form floes that can be skimmed or otherwise removed from the liquid, additives such as cationic species, anionic species, acids , bases, clays, diatomaceous earth, coagulants and polymers are used to selectively alter the chemistry of contaminated liquids and remove contaminants. [0003] Preferably the contaminating liquid and treatment additive form a homogeneous mixture such that when the dissolved gas is added and subsequently a...
