Problems solved by technology

For example, increasing the operating frequency of the internal bus increases the overall efficiency, but this solution complicates the design of the master-slave interface, and generally requires the redesign of the slave device to operate at a faster speed
For those slaves that already exist or are being designed, increasing the internal bus frequency may require additional work time and difficulty in redesigning these components

Embodiment Construction

[0063] The present invention overcomes the efficiency problem of the known technique by allowing large amounts of data to be transferred between two slave devices in a master-slave system using DMA data transfer processing. By dividing the shared bus into two or more separate buses and changing the design of the conventional DMA controller to eliminate the above-mentioned bottleneck, the data transfer rate can be substantially increased by at least two times. At the same time, the present invention does not increase the operating frequency of the computer system and does not change the design of the slave device, so that the DMA controller of the present invention can perform faster DMA data transmission procedures. The improved DMA controller according to the present invention can (1) read from a memory device and (2) write to a peripheral device simultaneously, thereby more efficiently transferring data from one slave device to another. In another embodiment, the DMA control...

Abstract

Direct memory access (DMA) controllers of a master / slave computer system and methods for transferring data under a DMA protocol in a master / slave system are disclosed herein. A DMA controller according to the present application comprising a first data path connected to a memory bus, wherein the memory bus is in communication with at least one memory device. The DMA controller also comprises a second data path connected to a peripheral bus, wherein the peripheral bus is in communication with at least one peripheral device. Also, the DMA controller comprises a device for transferring data between one of the at least one memory device and one of the at least one peripheral device.

Description

technical field [0001] The present invention relates to transferring data from one component to another, and more particularly to a direct memory access scheme for transferring data in a master-slave computer system. Background technique [0002] Many computer systems incorporate direct memory access (DMA) to transfer data from one component to another. The advantage of DMA is that the main processor or central processing unit (CPU) of the computer system is not involved in the actual data transfer. By using the DMA mechanism, the CPU can simultaneously execute an application that is not related to the DMA data transfer. [0003] Generally, DMA is controlled by a DMA controller device. For example, during a "read" command, the DMA controller arranges for a memory device to transfer data stored therein to an I / O device or peripheral device. The mode of transfer can depend on the DMA controller depending on whether the DMA system is part of a "master / slave" computer system ...
