Embodiment Construction

[0032] In the following description, for purposes of explanation rather than limitation, specific details are set forth, such as specific protocols, signal formats, etc., in order to provide a thorough understanding of the present invention. It will be apparent to those skilled in the art that the present invention may be practiced in other embodiments that depart from these specific details. In particular, although various embodiments are described herein below that are incorporated into or used in conjunction with systems that utilize SCTP on top of IP, the invention is not limited to such implementations, but may be used for any sequential data replay, for example. transmission protocol (or any other data communication system in which stale, stale or expired messages can be retransmitted).

[0033] Furthermore, those skilled in the art will appreciate that the functions explained herein below may be implemented using separate hardware circuits, using software functions in c...

Abstract

A technique for handling outdated information units within a retransmission scheme like the one specified by the Stream Control Protocol (SCTP) is described. The technique identifies outdated information units that were previously transmitted along with corresponding identification codes associated with the outdated information units (210). The outdated information unit is subsequently modified prior to retransmission to generate a dummy data information unit that has the identification code of the outdated information unit (220). The dummy information unit is then transmitted to a receiver (230) where it is subsequently discarded or ignored.

Description

technical field [0001] The present invention relates to communications. More specifically, the present invention relates to a technique for handling obsolete information units within a retransmission scheme. Background technique [0002] Recent advances in data transfer protocols have improved the reliability of data transfers over connectionless packet networks such as Internet Protocol (IP) networks. A relatively new data transfer protocol, the Stream Control Transmission Protocol (SCTP), is being gradually adopted on top of IP in applications where monitoring and detection of session loss is required (see, for example, Signaling by the Internet Engineering Task Force The SCTP standard draft document RFC2960 prepared by the Transport Working Group). SCTP provides acknowledged error-free, non-duplicated message delivery. SCTP also incorporates checksums and sequence numbers to detect data corruption, data loss, and data duplication. If data is lost or corrupted, SCTP in...
