Embodiment Construction

[0020] Referring to Figure 1, a protected vehicle is shown as 1 containing a VHF miniaturized transponder of the previously described generic "LoJack" or similar type of random concealment embedded, comprising a receiver 6 and a transponder transmitter 7 ( RX, TX). Once the vehicle owner has reported or confirmed the theft of the vehicle to the network operations control center 3 along B, the transponder transmitter 7, as indicated by E, responds to the activation command received in the receiver 6 from the VHF antenna network tower 2, Periodically encoded responses are sent from the vehicle to the tracking police car 5, as fully described in said US Pat. Nos. 4,818,998 and 4,908,629.

[0021] According to the example of FIG. 1 , the vehicle VHF transponder has been supplemented with an operating range processor-sensor 8 of the type described in the aforementioned US Pat. No. 6,665,613, which is provided by the transmitter 7 along to the antenna tower 2 The uplink path A tran...

Abstract

A system and technique for improving the speed and ease of missing vehicle location and recovery by vehicle-carried transponder periodic coded replies to radio interrogation by a network of (VHF) transmitting towers, by integrating a concealed GPS location receiver with the transponder and providing the GPS-obtained coordinate information through the VHF network to enable a preliminary initial recovery location from which to home-in for recovery by subsequent direction-finding from the periodic transponder responses. Other location-on-demand services are also readily operable through the use of this VHF network, including providing said GPS coordinate or location information on the Internet.

Description

technical field [0001] This invention relates to a system for locating and recovering stolen or unauthorizedly moved ("lost") customer vehicles, preferably in and titled U.S. Patents 4,818,998 and 4,908,629 to LoJack(R) Corporation, common assignee hereby. of the type described in the 1989 booklet of the "LoJack Stolen Vehicle Police Recovery Network" and addressing not only the problem of extending the speed and ease of such recovery, but extending the limited current local VHF law enforcement assistance established for this purpose More specifically, the present invention additionally relates to extending the ability to provide on-demand location-assisted service features by means of GPS or other radio-navigated vehicle location information, namely (1) via such "LoJack" VHF networks improve the recovery of law enforcement assistance, and (2) provide customers with ancillary and even country-wide service features via the Internet, as examples of such ancillary service feature...
