[0038] There is a need to obtain a polynaphthylene polyethersulfone comprising significantly reduced amounts of cyclic oligomers and having a narrower polydispersity. Furthermore, since the melt viscosity of PES is simply too high for melt processing of the material, PES can only be used for producing objects such as films by solution casting. It is highly desirable to have a glass transition temperature (T g ), and poly(phthalazinyl ether sulfone) that can be made into articles, films, sheets, and fibers by melt processing such as extrusion molding, injection molding, and blow molding.

Abstract

This invention relates to a new poly(phthalazinone ether sulfone) composition and a process for its manufacture, and to articles molded of the composition. It has been determined, in accordance with the invention, that poly(phthalazinone ether sulfone)s, including both their homopolymers and copolymers, can be prepared with improved polydispersivity, low level of cyclic oligomers, and can be processed via melt processes such as extrusion and injection molding.
