Problems solved by technology

However, such an approach has serious flaws:
[0008] Reuse of the 3GPP WLAN interworking solution described above would mean using a Virtual Private Network (VPN)-like tunnel from the (mobile) User Equipment (UE) to the Packet Data Gateway (PDG) of the 3GPP network, which is not well suited for the WiMAX context, Because the VPN-like tunnel is based on the second version of Internet Key Exchange (IKEv2) and Internet Protocol Security (IPSec) implementation: IKEv2 execution cycle keeps active (cyclic keep alive), which will prevent WiMAX terminals from entering idle mode, so it needs to be in Additional signaling on the radio link and additional terminal power consumption
On the other hand, IPSec is useless because WiMAX already provides a secure end-to-end solution, so additional IPSec encryption / integrity over WiMAX will only generate overhead traffic over the WiMAX wireless link
In addition, useless IPSec requires additional CPU performance in both the terminal and the network, thus leading to an increase in cost

Embodiment Construction

[0035] Fig. 1 shows a schematic block diagram of an embodiment of a communication system 1 according to the invention. The communication system 1 generally comprises a standardized wireless communication network in the form of a WiMAX network 2 and a standardized cellular network in the form of a 3G core network 3, which are operatively connected for interworking. Additionally, according to the illustrated embodiment, the communication system 1 further comprises a further network in the form of an IP network / Internet 4 .

[0036] In a WiMAX network part 2, the communication system 1 comprises at least one mobile terminal 5, also referred to as a mobile station (MS) or user equipment (UE). Furthermore, the WiMAX network 2 comprises a plurality of base stations (BS) 6, also called access points. The base station 6 is connected to an access server node gateway (ASN-GW) 7, also known as a Wimax access controller (WAC), which acts as a router for transmissions from multiple base sta...

Abstract

A method for performing interworking of a standardised wireless communication network (2) and a standardised cellular network (3), comprising the steps of: using a marked service flow over a radio link in the standardised wireless communication network (2) as being dedicated to be sent over the standardised cellular network (3); transporting said marked service flow in a service flow tunnel (13.2) in the standardised wireless communication network (2); mapping said service flow tunnel (13.2) to an inter-network tunnel (13.3) from an element (7) of said standardised wireless communication network (2) to an element (8) of said standardised cellular network (3).
